Fashion photography

1. When is an image a Portrait? When is it a fashion photograph? Are the two the Same?

It is a Portrait when….. its when you can only see the head and the shoulders that is needed as a portrait.

Portraiture is true to reality and for example Diane Arbus took photos of the matthei family with there daughter looking upset.

It is a Fashion photograph when……  The viewing on the whole person set from head to toe shows the style of the clothes or other things more than the person it may not be completely real the final photo maybe photo shopped or other manipulations may have taken place

2. To what degree should an image manipulated to go into a fashion magazine?

In the film the following manipulations occurs.

How about manipulations to the photos before they are taken, models, Makeup, sets and clothes by changing the style of what they wear.

The change of the persons features like their skin colour or editing their face on a computer using Photoshop is wrong.

The good thing to change is the hair and make up to make the person look a lot different also changing the contrast is good.

Oj Simpson Newsweek Time

This is an example of manipulation.

3. Is there a clash between the creative and commercial side of fashion Photography?

What clashes occur in the film between the creative and commercial?

The clash was between Anna and Grace choosing both clothes and which pictures to decide upon, Anna kept bossing Grace about telling her which is wrong and which is right and being in control of her by giving her orders.

Who wins? Commercial

Do you agree? Why?

No I don't agree because the photos they create end up in magazines or street advisement's either way but also the creative side could win by showing a better effect on fashion and by giving more ideas to make a balance between the two sides most times.

They used a 1920's type image and changed it for commercial reasons by doing this they diluted the creativity of the work.

In adverts they make the advert more perfect than it actually needs to be by photo shopping other things into for example changing the persons face another example using a really nice car, instead of using rain they change it to a perfect sunny day.

names of photo artists / portraiture

Diane Arbus (Matthaei family portraits)
Walker Evans
Richard Avedon
Tony Vaccaro
Larry Clark

The artist I am choosing is Tony Vaccaro because the photos he takes shows a massive effect on both history and war by using a technique invented by henri cartei bresson called the decisive moment, how he got the idea he waited for the perfect time to get the image to create the decisive moment. Also he would trick people into taking their photo he would also make it seem like celebrities are standing on a pedestal by determine the personality also known as suave he even took pictures of Picasso.

Tony vaccaro also took pictures during the war he even developed his own photos using ink and water but some of his photos got destroyed whilst he was developing his photos

In historical times the rich and powerful people for example kings and queens had the power to have there pictures painted but modern days the photographer has the power for example Tony Vaccaro had power by taking the photo by making Picasso caught off guard.

photojournalism war

Who where they? Robert Capa worked for life magazine and Tony Vaccaro was a soldier who took pictures but only in certain areas during the war.

What effect did they create? they both done the decisive moment using certain cameras which were called Leica and Augus C3.

What cameras did they use? Capa used a camera called a Leica which was a very old camera which he was using and Vaccaro used the Augus C3 which is also very old but at the time was one of the best cameras in the world which is how the photographers used them days.

Also he created his pictures using water in helmets and some other chemicals to develop them quickly
some of Robert Capa's pictures got destroyed.

Eddie Adams execution difference between picture and video.

The video shows it was kinda shocking that the guy with a gun shooting the other guy in the head which made a TV report the guy holding the gun didn't realise he going to shoot him and in the picture just shows the right timing when the guy shot him in the head by taking the picture at the right time.

“Saigon Execution” is one of the most recognizable photographs in military history, and it played a contributing role in turning public opinion against the Vietnam War. The image—by combat photographer Eddie Adams—captures the moment a uniformed South Vietnamese officer fires a bullet into the head of a man who appears to be a civilian.
The man who was shot was Bay Lop, who had beheaded people, been caught in the act of gunning down policemen, and killed the family of one of General Loan’s friends. That doesn’t necessarily justify what Loan did. But when stripped of context, it looked like someone from the South Vietnamese national police gunning down some helpless guy, and that was not the case. Bay Lop was the leader of a sophisticated assassination team that was attempting to knock off all the top leaders [of South Vietnam], and General Loan was on their list.
